WHO IS THIS GUY, ROBIN BUDD?

Glad you asked!

I design & direct animation. Episodic television primarily, but feature work as well.

Whatever the format, it’s all about communicating that fabulous script you just got green lit, in the most creative way possible. I believe in keeping the story clear and entertaining, giving a touchstone to the emotional journey, and never shying away from a good laugh.

I draw every day, which is handy when communicating with artists. It also helps when adapting an existing style into animation, or art directing a brand new approach.

Something else I do, from time to time, is win awards like the 2013 and 2019 Canadian Screen Award for Best Direction, or the 2011 Banff World Television Festival Award of Excellence. #humblebrag.

I’ve had the chance to collaborate with great writers, creative animation teams, and innovative studios, which has given me the opportunity to become bold, fresh, funny, and hip! …Okay, although that only partly describes me in person, it does do justice to the shows I’ve directed. Testimonials & recommendations

Jason Groh, Director

"Robin Budd is a highly inventive visual communicator, a one-of-a-kind visionary, and all his work bears his stamp of creative quality. He is detail-oriented but never puts the big picture second. Robin knows exactly what he wants his work to say, and he knows how to conceive it and build it from the foundation up.

No story, style, or technique is beyond his creative reach. Robin's direction is always inspirational. There is Robin Budd... and then there are the rest of us!"

STEPHANIE DUNCAN, LEICA EDITOR – RUBY GLOOM, TRUCKTOWN

"There’s nothing I’d rather be doing than helping Robin Budd make cartoons. Robin is the most inspiring and collaborative director I’ve ever worked with. He loves the Leica process, as this is where he is most able to impact the story, by visually enhancing the storyboard, fleshing out the characters and clarifying story points. It’s a lot of fun to be in a room with him, coming up with ways to better tell the story at hand.

Robin allows everyone on his team to do the job they were hired to do, without micro-managing,  guiding us to incorporate his vision, but always encouraging new ideas, which inspires creative solutions and wonderful looking shows, not to mention happy crews."

HUGH DUFFY,  STORY EDITOR/WRITER

"It’s a pleasure and a privilege to work with this talented director, Robin Budd. Our craft is one of collaboration and Robin is a master at it. I have worked with Robin on numerous projects and he’s always a supportive and inspiring force throughout. He not only understands the writing process and how to visually express the stories the writers give him, but he always adds his own flair, his own comedy and his own physicality to make the end result so surprising and rich. It’s so rewarding to see my scripts on screen when Robin gets finished with them."

Carolyn Hay, Story editor/writer

"I’ve been lucky enough to work with Robin on a variety of projects and am always blown away by his talent, his enthusiasm and his unique ability to collaborate with everyone on the team. He’s so respectful of the writer’s work and takes it to another level when he brings it to screen. On top of all that, he’s just way too much fun to work with."

Christina Sang-St.Catherine, ProduceR

"I have had the pleasure of working with Robin on the preschool series Trucktown over the past three years. Robin's approach to storytelling is the perfect combination of focused vision and collaboration, while at the same time maintaining an openness to the unexpected. He is able to work with writers to not only execute but enhance the collective vision, always finding ways to push the creativity within the challenges of television production."
